Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Isaiah 6:5 KJV

Some years ago a group of college music students toured Europe to visit sites associated with a famous classical composer. Their final stop was the man's home where by special arrangement their tour guide was the director who was a recognized authority on the composer.

The last room on the house tour featured the composer’s piano where he first played his famous works and their host paused as they regarded the 300 year old instrument. Then as the guide mentioned it could still be played, one of the students impulsively blurted "Oh cool! Can I play it?"

The guide shook his head with a slight smile and the student said, “But surely if I was famous I could.”

“Well, we once had one visitor,” The guide mentioned an internationally known concert pianist. “Someone suggested he play it but he said he wasn't worthy to touch it."

It was very much the same as in our passage when Isaiah totally comprehended how humanly unworthy he was, how his flawed sinful nature prevented his relationship with a holy God. However, God provided the connection as the divine touch from the coal symbolized the cleansing that enabled the connection with the Almighty.

We have the same ongoing difficulty – where our imperfection prevents our divine association – but the great news is that God has already solved the problem for us. For in his grace, he arranged Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, and with our belief in that provision we can be made right with God. Theologians call this justification, but we can call it a demonstration of God's matchless love for us.
