After Neil and Lizzie woke up the next morning, they did a Bible study on Luke 1, the chapter in which theMagi came to see Baby Jesus and bring Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

"Those were very special gifts," Neil explained to Lizzie. They brought Baby Jesus gold, because He is the King of kings. Gold is the color for kings. They brought Him frankincense, because He is God, and the priests used incense when praying to God. Myrrh is what they used for death and burial, and they brought Baby Jesus myrrh, because He would die on the cross for all of our sins."

Lizzie's eyes opened wide with wonder and amazement. "Ohhh, I see," she said. "They gave Baby Jesus those special presents because He is God and our King and He died on the cross for the bad things we do."

Neil smiled and nodded. "That's right, sweetheart."

After a delicious oatmeal breakfast, they headed to Gayla's house. Neil knocked on the door nervously, expecting his mother to greet him with a scowl. Instead, he was surprised and happy to find his younger brother, Mark, open the other side and greet him and Lizzie with a big grin and big hugs. Mark had been doing remote work as a freelance writer in Chicago, but he has recently moved back to California and had taken his work with him. Neil had just had no idea he was living with their mom.

After Neil introduced Mark and Lizzie, Mark sighed. "I've been taking care of her for a year," he said to Neil. "I didn't know how to tell you, dude. I wanted you to still come and see me but wasn't sure if you would if you knew I was living with Mom. By the way, I'm really sorry about Laura."

Neil felt a lump in his throat and swallowed quickly. "Thanks, man."

Mark exhaled loudly. "Mom's in the living room. She's not doing too well. I'm telling you, man, you wouldn't recognize her."

Neil was extremely worried by this news, but he was also unsure of how his mom would react about him being there. He gently lifted Lizzie onto his hip and carried her into the living room, walking very slowly with nervousness.

Suddenly Lizzie blurted out, "Daddy, why is there a beanbag on the chair?"

Neil looked to his side and was surprised at what he saw. There, in the armchair, was his mother. Her stomach had become the size of a boulder, and her arms and legs were so swollen they didn't even look real.

Gayla glared at her son. "Get out of here and take your brat with you."

Lizzie's eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry, Grandma. I didn't see your face. At first I thought you were a beanbag."

Neil pressed a kiss to his daughter's forehead. "It's all right, honey. Let's just go."
