When was the last time you stood back, watching a true master craftsman? There's something fascinating—humbling—about seeing skilled hands shape ordinary stuff into magnificent structures. Beautiful. Enduring.
Rich, my father-in-law, had those hands—but not just with bricks and mortar. They shaped his life.
This morning, Rich finally laid down his tools. After 63 years married to Joyce, giving four kids a new family, after a lifetime following Jesus, he headed home to the One he knew as the true Master Builder.
Rich knew construction. As a master brick mason and LA County Building Inspector, he understood the importance of a solid foundation. But his real gift was building his life on Christ—the Cornerstone that never cracks or crumbles and defines the integrity of the entire building.
Paul once said, "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:11 NLT). Rich believed those words. He built his family on love, his reputation on integrity, and his faith on the solid rock of his Savior.
Side note: Rich was also an advanced black belt who could instantly drop you to the ground! But if you asked him, he'd quietly tell you: true strength isn't about control or dominance. It's about submitting your life to Jesus.
What about us? What’s our foundation? Are we stacking bricks of worry, self-reliance, or fear? Or are we placing our trust in a foundation that won't shake—like Rich did?
It's worth pausing to examine our foundation. Are hairline cracks appearing? Weak spots you might've overlooked? Is it time to call the Master Craftsman?
Rich's life spoke loud and clear: if you build on Christ, your life withstands even the fiercest storms.
Prayer: Father, teach us to build our lives on You—the unshakeable cornerstone. May our lives, just like Rich's, shine as images of Your perfect love and grace. Amen.
