On March 22, 2025, Reverend Benjamin Bandanadam, the Associate Pastor of Saint Benedict Catholic Church, delivered a powerful homily that reminiscences on the journey of the Chosen People from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. He recounted that Moses led approximately 600,000 Hebrew slaves out of Egypt after 400 years of captivity, guiding them toward Canaan, a land promised to Abraham generations earlier. The journey required the Israelites to traverse the Sinai Desert, a region characterized by two-thirds desert terrain and one-third inhospitable mountainous areas, covering about 23,500 square miles—similar in size to the state of West Virginia.

Father Benjamin noted a striking fact: despite the large number of individuals who left Egypt, only two (0.0000033%)—Joshua, of the tribe of Ephraim, and Caleb, of the tribe of Judah—reached the Promised Land. He posed a critical question about why the majority of those who began the journey did not reach their destination. The answer lies in the repeated defiant behavior of the Israelites. Throughout their journey, they frequently violated the covenant they had established with God, worshiped false idols, questioned His (God’s) authority, and did not show genuine remorse for their sins. The result was that the Chosen People remained in desolation for 40 years when they could have, with God’s direction, traversed their journey of 381 straight-line miles in approximately 91 travel hours, about 23 to 31 days, under the assumption that 600,000 men, women and children could move 3 or 4 miles per day.

Father Benjamin called upon the faithful to reflect on their spiritual journeys during the 2025 Lenten season. He emphasized the importance of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as essential practices for deepening one's faith, repenting of sins, and preparing for Easter—a time of celebration commemorating the resurrection of Christ and the salvation of humankind for eternity.
