Opposition and Rebuking

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then he and his disciples went to another village. Luke 9:51-56 NIV

It seems like James and John were a bit power hungry here, wanting to know if they should call down fire upon the towns that would not welcome the Lord. The Lord was quick to rebuke them. God sends blessings upon those who are evil, as well as those who are righteous. The sun rises upon the evil as well as the good. We are to love all, even our enemies. We should pray for all that they would come to the Lord. Be kind and merciful unto all, just as the Lord is kind and merciful unto you.
