Following ongoing soap opera dramas often becomes a daily habit. Soaps began on the radio and were easily adapted to television. My mom didn’t watch them when I was growing up but became a faithful viewer in later years. Afternoon soap operas impacted my life shortly after I was married.

We got our first TV; a small black and white portable. My husband bought it for my birthday but had mixed motives. It allowed him to watch upcoming presidential candidate conventions during the evenings. Alone in the daytime (while he was working) I controlled the TV.

Game shows were quickly favorites. I played along with contestants on Password, You Don't Say and The Price Is Right. It didn’t take me long to temporarily add soaps to daily viewing. I was introduced to the characters of General Hospital, One Life to Live and Dark Shadows.

I was a new Christian and hadn’t yet learned to discern all evil. Dark Shadows was indeed dark; dark and evil. The name of the program should have been enough to alert me.

Did creators of One Life to Live know how right they were?

I have only one life to live: it is precious to God and holds great potential.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV).”
