Author requests article critique

Once again I found God’s promises to be true. Following scans that identified my condition as being “serious”; coupled with other serious health issues I already have, reading the results had taken me aback. Before I slipped into despair, which I felt would be easy to do if not careful, I was unexpectedly impressed with the instruction to, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.”

Being the title of an old hymn that’s based on His Word, I could almost hear the long-ago words and music echoing in my heart.

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus  Look full on His wonderful face  And the things of earth will grow strangely dim  In the light of His glory and grace.” I did, and the stress faded before it grew any stronger.

I then began thinking about the message at the hymn’s beginning: “O soul, are you weary and troubled?  No light in the darkness you see?  There’s light for a look at the Savior  And life more abundant and free!” God truly knows best how to reach our hearts with His comfort. Thankfully we can trust Him.

When life seems right or wrong, we can wisely build our trust by practicing being aware of His continuing presence in our life, and treating Him like we do a best friend – by bouncing around our thoughts, celebrating together the good, looking for good advice when troubled, and just knowing they will be there when we’re down and need them. And by seeing His Word as holding bits of treasure just waiting for us to discover, can deepen our trust, and greatly enrich our life for now and the future. It all works together to help us keep our eyes … and so our heart … focused on Him who truly is our light that shines even brighter in our dark places.

“Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done ….” 1 Chronicles 16:10-12 NIV

This is a well-written worthwhile devotional. Maybe I think that because this hymn has meant so much to me in these same useful ways. You say you are new to personal writing. This devotional has meat, something to chew on. So I encourage you to keep drawing on your experiences and keep writing.
