No Real Choice

My eyes misty with tears, I tried to do my job and at the same time to disregard the newly placed partition between my desk and that of my coworker across from me. Someone who up till then had been friendly.

Indeed, at first she was pleasant and cheery, but when our company remodeled their offices the boss decided to move her desk into my office and place it across from mine. After that she seemed to change. Over the next few days she gradually became grimly silent during work breaks and shook off my attempts to chat. Then came the partition. She closely supervised its installation, and after it was in place she muttered something like “I think we need this….”  

But why?  Had I offended her in some unknown way? I didn’t know since she wouldn’t talk to me. But more important - what should I do now?

The answer was clear - the only correct response was to treat her with love, with courteous respect.  After all, my fellowship with Christ called me to respond with love – no matter what happened or what lay ahead. After all, I had no real choice.

With that decision I ignored the partition and with new resolve I resumed my work.
