Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life (Ps. 142:4 NIV)
Minister, musician and traveling evangelist Charles F. Weigle had to travel, a reality that was hard for his wife. Then one day he came home to find her gone, leaving a note that she could not live that way anymore. Sometime later as she passed away that left Weigle in an anguish filled depression that only increased. Where was God in all this? In his misery it seemed that the Lord had not only abandoned him but no longer cared. In his misery, he never felt further from his Savior.
However, over time as Weigle renewed his relationship with the Lord and was encouraged by Christ’s love for him. Then one day as sat at his piano and concentrated on the reaffirmations, words and a melody began to flow. Within 20 minutes he had completed what became the classic gospel song “No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus.” Published in 1932, it became a popular solo number particularly in the 1950s as it was featured in the Billy Graham crusades.
In our passage, David described the same natural sense of isolation from God as he hid from the vindictive King Saul. Yet like with Mr. Weigle it was only temporary since they both realized that God had not only not forgotten them but still had great plans for them.
Maybe you’ve had the same experience where you felt God has deserted and forgotten you. So where do you attain relief and reassurance? From others? Possibly, but perhaps the best answer is from the same divine Friend Who comforted Dr. Weigle and David. After all, certainly no one cares more about you than the One who will then restore and redirect you into a new life with Him.
