How's Your Cast?

I haven’t gone fishing in ages; can’t say I really miss it. I don’t think I held a cane pole until after I married. My husband Norm baited my hook, showed me how to cast the line and to watch for the sinker to bob in Mississippi rivers.

Much earlier, as a girl, I watched avid trout fisherman walk through our side yard. They were anxious to cast their lines into Poolsbrook Creek. New York State Fish and Wildlife Department stocked the creek with fresh trout each year.

Neighbor, Dale especially liked fishing in the rain. We often saw him dressed in his rubber rain gear casting his fishing line. Naturally, he would cast the line out as far as he could. Fishing afforded him time to unwind from a family business.

The Mycenae ‘crick’ waters were clear and a favorite of many. My younger brother Gary sometimes made friends with fishermen. Not wanting their catch, they gave them to him. One man caught a fish. One boy carried it to the house and one family reaped the rewards.

The farther I cast away my cares, the less likely I’ll reel them in!
