Nausea sneaks up on me like a hungry mosquito feasting on my flesh. I scan the horizon, determined to keep it at bay. The water is unusually rough today, with 10-foot swells, but the beauty of God’s creation is majestic. A bald eagle sits high in an evergreen surveying its domain, while the surf slams into nearby rock formations.
We spot a whale, and black dolphins after less than an hour on the water—a rarity. My friend beams. D is in her fifties, but grins like an excited five-year-old. “This is so much fun! I’ve never experienced anything like this.” Her smile widens and she reels frantically after snagging another fish. She will later say, “I caught a fish every time I cast my pole.”
D has never been deep sea fishing. Yet, after my husband briefly explains and demonstrates the process, she takes to it like a natural. Within hours, we have caught our daily limit.
As we head back to the marina, I ponder the passage I’d read that morning about other fishermen. Though fishing was their trade, they had never experienced anything like what they did with Jesus. So, just like D, they listened and watched. Just as she had faith in what my husband said; the disciples had to have faith in Jesus.
Things are no different today. We, too, must have faith in the truth found in the Bible. We, too, are commissioned to be fishers of people. Yet, do we heed the call? Are we celebrating over God’s daily catch through us? Or are we living in fear of failure or rejection?
God’s Word tells us everything we need to know to be successful. I don’t know about you, but I want to be an enthusiastic fisherman—praying for more opportunities to cast my pole.
Will you join me?
