Key Verses: (NLT)
  • 1: “Give honor to the LORD, you angels; give honor to the LORD for His glory and strength.” – The first two verses are a call to all beings in the divine realm to worship the Lord. This is an assertion that God alone reigns over the universe.

  • 3-9: “The voice of the LORD …” – God’s voice can be heard above the sound and fury of creation’s awesome displays of power. His majesty and power is revealed in and above all storms of life we face.

  • 10: “The LORD rules over the floodwaters. The LORD reigns as king forever.” – God sits enthroned over all creation, committed to providing us with His salvation and His blessings. We can take comfort that He is there, in control over all floods and disasters that threaten our lives.

  • 11: “The LORD gives His people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace.” – Peace awaits us after every storm.
Points to Contemplate:
  • Do you hear God’s voice in violent storms? Does the deafening noise cause you to tremble and shudder? Or, can you look to these moments like the psalmist did and attribute the cacophony of thunder, lightning, and wind to be the voice of God? Do you remember possibly thinking those thoughts as a child? Does simply knowing the scientific basis for thunderstorms mean we can’t think of God in these terms?

  • What is gained by focusing on God’s power as it is revealed through nature? Does it provide you any additional comfort or new awareness of His nature when you accept that He is in control, even during the most violent storms we face? Can you personalize this power when you are facing the storms of life such as illness, despair, and death? Do you recognize that during the darkest moments of our lives, God’s voice can still be heard above the din of anguish and the fury of suffering?

  • Are you strengthened by this Psalm? Does it teach you to listen for God’s voice no matter where you are? Can you hear Him speaking to you through the din and noise of our society? Can you listen for him through the clamor of loud television shows or incessant radio talk shows? In the noise of our hustle and bustle lives, through the storms of rush hour and crowded shopping malls where yelling and honking seem to prevail, can you still hear God’s voice above it all?

  • Do you feel God’s peace? Take a moment and think about how it feels right after a violent storm has passed. Can you smell the electricity still hanging in the air? Do you feel the freshness of a slight breeze through your hair? Does the returning peace, tranquility, and normalcy of life as exhibited in sounds such as birds singing and dogs barking give you comfort? Does the promise of this peace, even during the most violent of storms, carry through? Do you realize that God has given you the strength to persevere every storm and that you will obtain the ultimate peace He has in store for you?
Promise of the Gospel:

Read this psalm several times out loud. Emphasize the words “the voice of the LORD” as though they are thunderclaps in a violent storm. Allow the violence of the storm to build with each verse until it reaches its peak in verse ten. Shout at the top of your lungs: “The LORD reigns as king forever.” And now…the storm passes. The earth returns to the sounds of normal living. The birds emerge from their shelter and again begin foraging for food. Listen for the sound of song birds rejoicing in the peace that has returned as you calmly and quietly read the final words of this psalm; “The LORD blesses them with peace.” Take this promise of peace into your heart and allow it to strengthen you to endure every storm you experience in life.

Gary, this is a wonderful, awakening message for the New Year. We hear His voice in all things as He reigns as King forever and blesses us with peace. Thank you for sharing this lovely message.

It's been a long time since I've read anything that made every pore of my skin tingle. :::smile::: I recall David proclaiming that the Lord was with him on the mountain, with him in the valley, with him in heaven, and with him in hell... Even through the storms of life, Emmanuel, God is with us. And it's all a matter of listening... like Elijah did when he felt alone, to that gentle whisper. Though the voice of the Lord could just as easily have been heard in the wind, He chose to reveal Himself in a gentle whisper... peace.
