Watch out for flying Chicken wings!!
We were sitting at a lunch booth at McCrory's Department Store downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana-a shy young country boy from Caesar, MS and an even shyer young lady born just across the creek at Leetown, MS. This was our first date after having met at Kresses Department Store on Main Street in Baton Rouge. Born within 5 miles of each other and meeting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the insistence of my co-workers. Surely God had a plan for our lives, yet to be disclosed.
The person setting across the booth from me was a very beautiful, petit, young lady with long brown hair, dimples, and the most beautiful smile that I had ever seen. Love at first sight, you say. Not quite! Cindy was the daughter of a Baptist minister and I was not sure I wanted to get involved with a young lady who was afraid to even hold hands in public!
As in most instances on the first date we rolled out our best behavior. We made idle talk just trying to get to know each other, then a sly look at the other person when they looked the other way. It was a time to see if that ole spark is there.
McCrory's was famous for their blue-plate special; fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and corn bread. We both ordered the blue plate special, it being the cheapest thing on the menu and both of us realizing that $1.25 was a lot of money at that time in our lives.
We both began to eat our meal, trying to be very particular about our etiquette. Everyone knows that the only way to eat fried chicken is with the hands. You grab a wing and with both hands you pull it apart. What happened next I was not prepared for. Cindy grabs the chicken in the proper way and apparently the chicken was a little tougher to pull apart than she thought. With a mighty effort, the chicken came apart and part of the wing hit the back of the booth behind me. That's when I fell in love with Cindy. Not the dimples, not the long hair, not the captivating smile, but the flying chicken wing. I still pick on her about the flying chicken wing by telling her it embarrassed me so much that I dropped a whole hand full of mash potatoes. We both had a good laugh - the ice had been broken.
It has been 47 years, 5 children, 19 grand children, and 6 great grand children since our first date. Out of this union came one son who is a Baptist minister, one son-in-law who is a Baptist minister, and one grand son-in-law who is a Baptist minister. Am I bragging-no way! To God belongs the Glory!! God works in mysterious ways to gain his purpose.
Things have not always been rosy and even now we occasionally have a shouting match over things that usually don't mean much. When it gets to the point that I want to pull out what is left of my hair, I immediately go back to that point in time when that piece of chicken wing hit the back of the booth where I was sitting. Its then that I fall in love all over again with that beautiful gray haired woman that I met 47 some odd years ago.
We, as Gods children, sometime find ourselves on the outs with our Heavenly father. I do things I know is wrong in Gods sight. I forget to study his word. I forget to pray. I put worldly things before God. This causes a break in our relationship. We have a shouting match, so to speak. It's a terrible feeling, a lonely feeling. Satan tries to tell me that I am not saved. Its then that I go back to the time I got saved many years ago. I go back to the time I completely trusted Jesus with my soul. Then and only then do I have the peace that surpasses all understanding. In other words, I go back to the point in time when I fell in love with Jesus.
