History
Our First Great Awakening in the United States emphasized the sovereignty of God under the leadership of men like George Whitfield and Jonathan Edwards. Our Second Great Awakening in the first half of the 19th century under the leadership of men like Charles Finney and Timothy Dwight emphasized the personal responsibility of the believer. The first awakening helped prepare us and provide us the strength of character so needed to win our independence in the Revolutionary War. The second one helped prepare us for the gut-wrenching agonies of The Civil War and the eventual emancipation of the slaves. The Third Great Awakening, otherwise known as the Grand Awakening, will emphasize both: God's sovereign work and timing, and our own hunger and prayer, as well as our own informed engagement as citizens involved in current affairs.
