Christmas Day Miracle

Feliz Navidad! It’s December 1982, and our family of four is living in Mexico. We have been here since August, while my husband and others from the United States are working and training in the new Ford Engine Plant in Chihuahua.

We have met friends and learned Mexican customs. But as the holiday approaches, we are missing our families and Christmas traditions more than ever.

Early Christmas morning we drive to the Ford plant to call our families in the United States and wish them a Merry Christmas. It is unusually warm there and their windows are open as they prepare the Christmas feast. We try to stay upbeat, though we miss the festivities so much.

This afternoon, because we are now in a house, we are hosting the families with children for a Christmas dinner. The children are coloring placemats for the tables. The adults have chores: setting up tables and chairs, stirring the gravy, peeling potatoes, and so on. Folks still living in the hotel are happy to be cooking in a kitchen.

Dinner is ready. We gather. Putting on happy faces as we try not to miss our homes and families who are far away. I’m feeding my baby when a young child cries out, “Look! It’s snowing!”

We all jump up and look out the windows. Yes! It’s snowing. Forget the food! We run out and have a snowball fight! Laughing and rolling in the snow.

The next day we are in shorts and tee shirts, but we know that a higher power sent a miracle to cheer us up on that special day.
