A Proverbs 31 Woman

Beware; ‘idle hands are the devil’s workshop.’

Pioneer women are featured in a great deal of my favorite old movies and television programs. I’ve often noticed how the women of the bygone era worked long after sunset. Sitting in rocking chairs, they knitted; sewed or did needle point. I’d like to think they followed the wisdom of scripture. 

“Poor is one who works with a lazy hand,
But the hand of the diligent makes rich (Proverbs 10:4 NASB).”

Busy hands are the Lord’s delight.

“Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which when translated means Dorcas); this woman was excelling in acts of kindness and charity which she did habitually. But it happened at that time that she became sick and died; and when they had washed her body, they laid it in an upstairs room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, having heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, ‘Do not delay in coming to us.’ So Peter got ready and went with them. When he arrived, they brought him into the room upstairs; and all the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing all the tunics and garments that Dorcas used to make while she was with them (Acts 9:36-39 NASB).”

Dorcas was a Proverbs 31 woman.

“An excellent wife, who can find her?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and linen,
And works with her hands in delight (Proverbs 31:10-13 NASB).”
