We understand here that Jesus is speaking of spiritual death. The spirit of the unbeliever is dead, dead to the which is of God. The unbeliever lives enslaved to that which is of this world. All will be lost for said one when they pass from this earth. The believer will pass from this earth into eternity in the presence of God. The believer is filled with the Spirit of God. For one to be in union with God they must be spirit filled, as God is Spirit. We must worship God in spirit, through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
