It All Begins

As a new year begins for us, I would like to direct our focus to a different beginning.

In the first verse of John’s gospel we read “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (NIV). This might be the most profound verse of scripture. How does one comprehend the existence of something or someone before the beginning? Our minds have a finite comprehension, and we certainly cannot understand all of who God is. We must accept the fact that He has and will always exist. There is absolutely no beginning or ending to God.

So, what is meant in saying that Jesus is the Word? God’s word was presented to man within the Bible. It contains many books, written by many individuals, yet it is Holy, as it is God’s word. Next, remember that in Genesis 1 God tells us that He created man in His own image. Yet man chose to be disobedient and sinned against the One in whose image we were created. But, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the personification of God being as man (in the flesh)  in the Father’s image. Jesus became man and is like us in all things except for Him never sinning. Jesus was not created but has been with the Father forever. Jesus did come to earth and took on flesh, God’s plan in perfection. Jesus is the image of God the Father. Later in John’s gospel He says that if you have seen Him you have seen the Father.

It is difficult for the human mind to comprehend the existence of more than  one being in a single being. But we must remember that God has no limits, and our understanding does not limit the reality of who God is.
