Possibilities?

For with God nothing will be impossible.” (Luke 1:37 NKJV)

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Kathy once asked her wiggly kindergarteners some years ago. Their answers varied of course and were often to be expected – for example the boys responded with the traditional - a fireman, a policeman, a doctor and such. It was the same for the girls as they gave predictable answers - a teacher, secretary, flight attendant and of course several simply wanted to be a “mommy.”

However, one youngster had yet to say anything so Kathy encouraged him. “We haven’t heard from you yet, Jeremy. What do you want to be when you grow up?” He lowered his head and said softly. “I want to be possible.”

Kathy hesitated before she asked, “I don’t understand.” Jeremy shrugged. “Well, mama always says I’m impossible – so I want to be possible.”

And we want to be the same - with God - as we follow his will for us and serve him. However, occasionally when we try we encounter some obstacles.

One challenge for us might come when we don’t want to surrender our own ideas and learn to rely on him to show us his way. Or perhaps we have an ongoing fault that we just can’t surrender – and that interferes with our service. Or maybe it’s because we’re just not serious about our commitment. But no matter what it is as long as it’s an issue – we’re just not “possible.”

In fact, Mary had the same challenge when she was told she was to be mother of the long-awaited Messiah – she saw obstacles but God saw nothing he couldn’t handle.  And that’s the lesson for us as well – to trust him then let him guide and provide.

After all, we do serve the God of the Impossible.
