Yuletide Yoke

The yuletide rush is upon us. Put on your running shoes as we synchronize our watches.

Most adults are familiar with the rush routine. First, we try to squeeze in as many parties and Christmas programs as possible. As we do, we play an exhausting game of catch-up; we must not fall behind or disappoint anyone.

Heaving a sigh, we check off attendance at festive calendar events and names from shopping lists.  By the end of each exhausting day, we wonder; how much did we actually accomplish? Taking a guilt trip, we fault ourselves for our lack of organization.

Have we lost the true spirit of Christmas?

The Christ child ushered in peace.

“For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this (Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV).”

Cast aside that heavy yuletide yoke. Christ’s yoke is light!

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV).”
