At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? John 7:26 NIV
Some present realized that this was Jesus speaking, the one the Jewish leaders were seeking. They were observant to the fact that the Jewish leaders were saying nothing to Him, and so they falsely surmised that maybe the Jewish leaders were beginning to think that He could be the Messiah. It is so sad that with the profound words, the truth which Jesus shared, that very few believed in Him.
