Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?” John 7:11 NIV

Yes, we see here exactly why Jesus did not publicly go to the festival. He knew the Jewish leaders were in search of Him so that they could find a way to kill Him. They wondered where He was since this was a big Jewish festival.
