I’ve always had a shadowy understanding of six simple straightforward words of instruction in the Bible that have bothered me, “Be holy for I am holy.”
Yes. I understand it means to be set apart. But to me there had to be more I wasn’t seeing. And I was right. Not long ago I discovered what I had been missing, which is so simple I truly do wonder why I didn’t see it sooner!
When I was on-line listening to a sermon, they began talking about holiness. Unexpectedly, out of the blue it struck me, could holy mean, be pure? Putting the teacher on pause, I looked up the definition. And there it was. “Pure”.
I believe Jesus spoke in parables for He knew if we can envision a spiritual principle, we can better grasp it. Then, as the popular saying goes, it can get from our head to our heart. That’s what happened to me.
With the word, pure, I could now picture us being like containers of water with various pieces and bits of debris and dirt floating around, which represent not-so-good things we pick up while moving through this world, and unseen contaminants like hidden sins, wrong thinking, and bad attitudes. But by using God’s filters that are found in His Word, I could see how we can become containers of pure, beautiful, sparkling water.
Clean water that can be “set apart” for good use. I finally got it! Holiness is faithfully living God’s Word so it can keep us free and pure of worldly living that contaminates our soul.
Happily, I went back and took the teacher off pause ... and guess what one of his next words was.
New insight confirmed. I enjoy it when God does things like that. And something tells me He truly enjoys it too!
