Merciful Doubting

Be merciful to those who doubt...  Jude 22 (NIV)

Secured in a governmental archive is a collection of objects that Abraham Lincoln had in his pocket when he was assassinated in 1865. Among the items are two pairs of spectacles, a lens polisher, a pocketknife, a watch fob, a handkerchief, a wallet with a five dollar Confederate note and eight newspaper clippings.  Yet what was interesting is that according to some reports, the clippings were all complimentary to Lincoln - written by reporters and editors expressing their admiration and respect for the President. For example, one article was a speech from a British official who called Lincoln, "One of the greatest men of all time."

So why would Lincoln carry something like that?  Some speculate that it could be that as President he found them reassuring. And if that was the case and Lincoln had a problem with doubt then so do we – and particularly on our Christian journey. But does that mean we’re spiritual failures because we do it?  And if we doubt what can we do?

The subject of doubting was apparently of concern to Jude’s readers since in our passage he reminds them to “be merciful” – or more understanding – of those who lack confidence.

Still, I’ve learned one way of dealing with my doubts - especially when they’ve evolved into self pity. If that’s the case then I apply some interesting reasoning. For if I have the spiritual energy to wallow in brooding insecurity then I certainly have the ability to use that same wallowing energy to turn to faith and thus acquire more divine confidence.

Then once that’s done thent I can move on with a new realization that I’m in God’s plan and know that he walks with me. And with that assurance there can be no doubt.
