Two stories to set this up for the main thought.

First, a story from the Revolutionary War period.  True story.  A Pastor had just got finished preaching from The Book of Ecclesiastes and covered the need for Christians to be involved in the fight for independence. “There is a time to talk, and a time to fight!” He strongly noted as he wrapped up his sermon.  This Pastor then took of his ministerial robes and revealed he was wearing a Continental Army officer’s uniform—rank proudly displayed.  The Pastor marched out of the pulpit, and 300 men in his congregation marched down the isle and out of the church house right behind them, become a part of the fight for freedom from the British.

The next story is relayed by the late D. James Kennedy.  Another true story.

A woman once asked Pastor Kennedy whether Christians ought to be involved in politics and government.  His answer?  “No madam, let the Pagans continue to run our country.”

I’ve been hearing some curious comments from various national church ministries mocking the political process and some of those involved in various elected (and appointed) political positions.  I have NOT been hearing many encouragements from these same national church ministries encouraging Christians to run for public office at the federal, state, or local level.

I’ll give you my .02 as to why the wind has changed among many nationally visible Pastors and it does have to do with the local political mood.  Back in the late 90s and early 00s, a host of big church Pastors had set up ‘training schools’ to encourage Christians to run for public office—of course with hefty ‘fees’ attached.  About that same time, Christian organizations attempted to ‘push’ moral issues—instead of Jesus Christ--into the public square.  BOTH extremes wound up doing more harm than good, and irritating more Christians (and non-Christians), sending them away from the polls and the hunt for public office.

Saints, it is up to us to ‘mix it up’ at the ballot box and in the political arena.  Slavery ended in the UK thanks to the persistence of William Wilberforce—a Christian statesman.  His inspiration eventually led to the end of slavery in the US by Abraham Lincoln—another statesman who loved the Lord.  In short, while the Lord will set one down and raise one up, He will also inspire men to seek public office to help turn things around.  Saints don’t buy the ‘hype’ that it won’t make any difference if we vote.  It will make a BIGGER difference if we don’t.  For, IF we don’t hit the ballot box, the ballot box will hit us.  A part of I Timothy 2:1-4 and Romans 13:1-9 (KJV) is our prayers for those in authority AND out votes.
