Are you an adder? Do you add to?

Are you a subtractor? Do you take away from?

Are you a divider? Do you separate many?

Are you a multiplier? Do you unite in numerous ways?

You may look at yourself and wonder how can I stop being a subtractor, or, even worse, a divider? Sometimes it is hard to be honest with ourselves and face the truth that our own hurt has led to us making choices that sap not only our energy, but that of others and cause us to look for flaws in others, become untrusting of others, and seek out ways to hurt others. It is a slippery and sobering slope when we allow years to pass with unresolved issues in our lives – some things even unacknowledged. Sometimes we have unrealized personal issues.

If, as the aphorism goes, “Hurt people, hurt people” then is it possible that mature people mature people? What am I speaking of when I bring up maturity? I am speaking of a faith that resides in a person who has asked God to search their heart and show them areas where healing and growth are needed, and they have allowed the Holy Spirit of God to work in their hearts in such a way that they have made spiritual growth something that has exceeded that of duty: it has become a passion. God’s Word is not an ornament on a table or bookshelf. It is the most studied book in their home. It is not studied for trivia. It is studied because God’s Word is that individual’s compass for their daily living. These are individuals who understand that every life experience should not be reduced to a popular slogan. These are people who understand that their words carry weight, so they pay attention to how they use them. These are individuals who recognize that what may look like an unanswered prayer may very well be the answer that they needed. These are individuals who have found for themselves that they can trust in the Lord with all of their hearts and lean not on their own understanding. They know that God cares about every aspect of their lives, so in all their ways they acknowledge Him, and they allow God to direct their path. They are kind to others and help in tangible ways when they are able to meet a need because they know that they may not always have the opportunity to do so in the future.

We become adders and multipliers when we allow God to heal us and use us for His glory. It’s amazing how much can get accomplished when we are not seeking self-glory; instead, we give all the glory to God!

How do we make a positive contribution in this world? By allowing God to mold our hearts and minds into what is pleasing to Him. May you be an adder and multiplier.
