What Was Their Yeast?

When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Matthew 16:5-6 NIV

So, what was the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees? It was all the evil stored into their hearts. They were filled with adherence to man-made traditions rather than to obedience to the commands of God. They were filled with self-righteousness, with seeking recognition from man than seeking after God’s kingdom. They acted as authorities rather than as helpers and servants. They only paid lip service to God. They thought their self-righteousness was their passport into heaven. God’s gift of salvation is given freely, yet it must be accepted. It is forced upon no one.
