Plans and Choices

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.  Isaiah 30:21 KJV

Lugging his large catch, Joe exuberantly clambered through the back door, and then dropped his creel and hook-laden fishing vest in the corner of the laundry room. That done, he charged through the kitchen door to where his wife was at the kitchen sink. “Hey, honey, look what I have!” He held up the fish with a broad smile.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Joe turned in obvious surprise as her husband assured her: “Don’t worry – you don’t have to do anything. I’ll change clothes and then fix it for dinner!”

“But...but...” Mrs. Joe stammered.”But you can’t! I’ve already thawed a chicken!”

Mrs. Joe apparently preferred her own dinner plans to her husband’s energetic intentions and it’s often the same in my spiritual life when I choose to prefer my own life plans to God’s superior designs.  And what often happens that what the Lord has in mind varies from my perfectly and personally created purposes. So I’m stymied because after all, why should I follow another path when I’ve already chosen my own?

Yet, when I think about it, preferring his ideas to mine isn’t just dumb; it’s even a bit pathetic. For why would I ever prefer my own imperfect plans – however carefully designed – when they’re just that – imperfect. Especially when his ideas are not only personally designed for me and his purposes for me they also cover every angle – especially some I would never anticipate or prepare for. So, knowing all this, why would I ever prefer my own human designs when his are far better than mine?

Maybe it’s the same for you. If so, then you might consider adjusting your plans and choices to the Lord’s personally designed purposes. For your benefit and his glory.
