The Jewish leaders did believe in the coming of Messiah, yet they would not make a concerted effort to check out the claims Jesus was making. In their minds they knew, or thought they knew how or when Messiah would come. It is as if they were telling God how Messiah was to come instead of realizing that man cannot understand God and how He carries out His plan. They were blind and could only see their ways and thus they wrote Jesus off as a blasphemer. Know that God works as He chooses and not as what man believes.
