Certain Identification

Several years ago I had a type of cancer and after successful surgery I was to have a month of radiation treatment to assure my complete recovery.. This meant that every weekday I'd go to a local clinic, check in at the front desk, then accompany the technician back to the treatment room.

The staff members were friendly and cordial, and as I was there on a regular basis I guess you could say we got to know each other quite well. They patiently answered my questions and concerns and our conversations on the way to the back were warm so they came to know me well

Yet what was interesting was that every day - each day - the technician had the same question: "What is your DOB (date of birth)?"

Now I certainly wasn't a stranger to them - they certainly knew who I was - still, they always asked the same question. But why? We all knew it was required by medical regulations to assure they were treating the right person but no matter how well they knew me they still had to ask. Soon it became amusing and even a sort of joke - and part of that was as if they didn't know me at all! 

Of course that's something I never have to fear with God because like the Psalmist says in our passage, he has “searched me and known me.” Of course that means he’s very completely familiar with everything about me - my whims, my often futile attempts at serving him, and of course my numerous failures. In fact there isn’t anything he doesn’t know about me And why? Easy - he created me!

And since he he has and he know me, there’s nothing to ask - and it’s certain identification.
