Tendencies
Exodus 19:1-24
After the third month of journeying from Egypt, God showed an intention to visit them while in the camp by the mount.
God instructed Moses severally in that chapter about His intention to make them peculiar treasures, kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. Moses was invited severally to the mount and sent back only to communicate God’s intention, promises ad instructions.
Despite the fact that the elders and the people promised God that they will obey (Exodus. 19:7-8), the concerns about their heart status was obvious in the series of instruction given in this chapter by God. There was God’s silent concerns in these many instructions (ex. 19:12-13). Moses had to be sent back from the mounts severally to go and meet with the people and warned them. God indeed came the third day, however this silent concerns of God was still there(Exodus. 19:21). It God’s principles and ways to scan through human’s heart before engaging them with the eternal and divine matters. He must have searched through their heart and was presenting this issues.
Although Moses defended and trusted their promises but it was obvious God had silent concerns about their negative tendencies!
AND the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. Exodus 19:21-22
Moses response in Exodus 19:23, revealed he trusted or was trying to assure God, to drop the silent concerns over their potential tendencies. Yet in Exodus 19:24 And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.
Moses had to go down again!
Actually, through chapter 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24, there were categories of instructions God gave to the people through Moses.
A tragedy broke up in Chapter 32 of Exodus to these ones who earlier promised God and couldn’t stand the absence of Moses. Therefore trusted and ascribe God’s glories to the golden calf they made by themselves than God who appeared to them!
The concerns of God then, was these tendencies that now manifested in Exodus 32:7-9
in Exodus32:7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them
They had tendencies then, and these were the concerns of God. He searches the heart of men and cannot be deceived by the face, status nor the utterances from the mouth!
What is your tendencies! Habits and abilities (positively or negatively) that when given favourable conditions will manifest. If evil prone, it is going to be a disaster!
God gives law or instruction to help us take care of our tendencies. Tendencies are things we are most prone to doing given favourable conditions. There are negative and positive tendencies. While we can progress and accomplish our dreams with positive tendencies, the devil will surely combat these with negative tendencies- some sponsored habits, attitudes and lifestyle to put us down. These are planted within us to get us distracted and sin against God. We must surely combat in our lives.
God often test our hearts and ways so that He can reveal to us what we can do now or in the future, secretly or in the publicly. However the devil will zealously make us ignorant of these. That’s his striking point.
While faith and courage is highly necessary in prosecuting many journeys and endeavours in life, wisdom is still the principal things. There will be need for wisdom to combat possible overconfidence, insensitivities, negligence and all other tendencies the devil intend to use to take advantage of us. Great, strong and mighty men and women can still fail. Devil with the aid of many negative tendencies unattended to or deal with, has planted the means by which a person defeat him or herself in the future!
