Poor In Spirit

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3 NIV

And here begins the Beatitudes, appropriately named, as Jesus is telling us to be of a certain attitude.

What a gift to know that one has the kingdom of heaven! With that in mind, it may be good to know what Jesus means by being poor in spirit. Would one who believes in Jesus have a troubled spirit? You would tend to think not. I believe this to mean that one knows that of themselves they have nothing good within that would make them worthy of blessings received from God. It is through God’s grace and mercy that we are blessed. We would be nothing without Him. If we trust in the Lord, knowing that we can do nothing to attain the kingdom of God, through our faith, hope, and trust in Him, we shall receive the kingdom of Heaven. God wants a personal relationship with each of us. He waits for us to allow Him into our heart. He is ready to provide for us more than we could ever hope to have. He wants us to be with Him forever. Allow yourself to be poor in spirit.
