Adam, Where Are You? Part 2

‘He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid”’  (Gen 3:10).

Adam’s fear led him into hiding but God did not remove the responsibility He had given to him. He still had authority to rule over the land and care for it.

“Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. …to work it and take care of it” (Gen 2:8,15).

On the journey of researching how to parent well, I also sought the Lord through prayer and fasting in how to be the wife and the mother He called me to be. He led me to His Word and as I was drawn to Proverbs 22 verse 6 (Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.) I wanted to learn more.

As I learned about how to train up our son, I was also learning what both my husband and I needed and therefore, were lacking from childhood. It was and still is a bitter-sweet journey. The more I learned about the role I played in the marriage, the more difficult it seemed to attain and maintain when my Adam was in hiding and didn’t even know it. He had pre-maturely arrived into adulthood and continued on that trajectory as he journeyed through marriage and parenting. When I realised his condition was inherited and he was oblivious to it, I fastened my seatbelt, anticipating the bumps and potholes we were about to encounter.

In Genesis 2:22-24 after acknowledging that it wasn’t good for man to be alone and finding no suitable match for Adam from among the animal kingdom, “…the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

From this passage, I learned that I honour God in honouring my husband. I came from man! There is no two ways about it, I am here to help him become all that God designed him to be. I am here, in his life to help him fulfil his purpose in life.

As parents, we learned the importance of being present for our son and have seen the positive outcome of applying Biblical principles to our parenting. We didn’t know what was required of us as parents. One of us had no model at all while the other had a very poor model. We simply knew that we didn’t want our son to experience the kind of pain attached to parental neglect. That’s the kind of pain that neither a child nor a teenager has a name for, and in many cases the adult doesn’t have a name for it either.

Nevertheless, that kind of pain often reveal itself in adulthood and find it affecting key relationships. Spouses and children pay the price for a husband and a father’s lack. So, I write today to encourage Adam to come out of hiding.

I know that is not going to be an easy task. Therefore, I am reaching out to those who are placed in the garden with Adam to help with this process.

Women: If you subscribe to the cause of feminism, it's time to put down your weapon of mass destruction and refuse to be used as a destructive force in putting down men. It has been a weapon long used to emasculate our men. Far too long we have been on the side of the enemy of our souls. We are our worst enemy if we believe we can do life on earth without the input of men.

It's time to wake up and recognise that when men aren't exercising their authority, as they were created to, we all lose. Society is worse for it! Our homes become a battlefield which spills out into society when men are stripped of their power.

Today, you have a choice:

Choose to stand by your husband if you are a wife. You have the key to his heart becoming pliable so God can complete the work He started in him. Make the choice to honour those vows you made at the altar and stand by your man.

If you need counselling, don't avoid getting the help, it may be hard work but keep at it. Pray. Acknowledge areas of hurt. Deal with the pain. Accept where you are on the journey. Repent of any sin holding you hostage. Ask God for the courage to apologise where necessary. Forgive as you have been forgiven. “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12). Seek God's help to do what needs to be done. Surrender it all to Him and allow Him to do a work in you, to strengthen you and give you the courage to stand.

If you're a mother of a son, help his father to train him up in the way he should go so he will grow in confidence and begin to walk in the authority given to him by His heavenly Father.

If his father is absent do not use your words to tear him down. That is damaging your son, his offspring.

If his father is at home, work with him. You are on the same team! You will not always agree but fight fairly and come to a compromise. Apologise when you're wrong. Forgive and seek forgiveness. The best gift you can give to your children is to demonstrate love to them - unity - authentic togetherness.

I hear God calling Adam, saying, "Where are you?"

How can you help the Adam in your sphere? If you are Adam in hiding, what is the simplest step you can take today to come out of hiding? Do you have a call to make? An apology to make or a promise to keep? I pray that reading this article will help you move in the right direction today.
