Shouting is Permissible
“Sh,h,h.” It was a frequent direction my Mother uttered as she steered my brother and me into a well-worn church pew. At this point in our young lives, we were well aware that we were in God’s House, and a particular behavior was expected. High on the list was quietness. We could draw or write with paper and pencil, make little animals with a hanky, or even sleep; but noise was definitely not permitted.
As I reflect on this particular practice, I wonder if that gave a wrong impression of what God truly desires. Recently, while rereading Isaiah, I happened across the following instructions, “Sing for joy, … shout aloud…” (Isaiah 44:23 NIV). I couldn’t help but think back to my childhood and the warnings to be quiet in God’s house. Later Isaiah foretells that a time is coming when mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees will clap their hands! Isaiah 55:12 (NIV)
I have been intrigued with the account of Jesus making His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The Pharisees wanted Jesus to rebuke His followers for praising God in loud voices. But He replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Can you imagine? Just think about that for a few moments!
Angels shouted for joy in His presence. (Job 38:7 NIV) Repeatedly, the Psalms admonish us to shout in God’s presence. There is a place for quiet reverence, for sure; but when I contemplate Jesus as the great Creator, all powerful Savior—the King of kings—I think there is a place for shouting, loud instruments, and even dancing as we praise and honor Him!
NIV Psalm 66:1, Psalm 150, Luke 19:37-40
I am a retired teacher, striving to make Jesus known.
