The Dead Sea Scrolls Calendar date for Tish’a B’Av 2022 is Saturday, July 30th, 2022 in the Anno Mundi year 5947.
Tish’a B’Av begins at sunset Friday July 29th and ends at sunset Saturday, July 30th.

The Hebrew Calendar date for Tish’a B’Av 2022 is Sunday, August 7th, 2022 in the Hebrew Year 5782.
Tish’a B’Av begins at sunset Saturday August 6th and ends at sunset Sunday, August 7th.

According to history, many events considered disastrous by the Jews have occurred on Tish’a B’Av, also called the Ninth of Av, the saddest day in Jewish history. It begins with the Fast of the 17th of Tammuz.

Tisha B’Av is the culmination of a three-week period of increasing mourning that begins with the Fast of the 17th of Tammuz. During this three-week period, the Scroll of Lamentations is read and prayers are recited during the evening services, and the Torah Scroll cabinet (Ark) is covered by black cloth. In some synagogues the Scroll of Job is read on the morning of Tisha B’Av. Tisha B’Av primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were destroyed on the ninth of Av. the first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. and the second Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D.

Weddings, other celebrations, and cutting the hair are not permitted. From the first to the ninth of Av, most people also refrain from eating meat or drinking wine and from wearing new clothing. These restrictions are very similar to the restrictions observed during Yom Kippur. They are:
• No eating or drinking
• No washing or bathing
• No application of creams or oils
• No wearing of (leather) shoes
• No marital relations

According to history, many disastrous events have occurred on Tish’a B’Av, also called the Ninth of Av, the saddest day in Jewish history. Some of those events are:
• The bad report brought by the spies from the promised land.
• The destruction of the first and second Temples.
• Numerous wars have started on this date.
• Numerous bombings and killing of Jews have happened on this date.

The First Occurrence
• Av 9, 1312 BC - Only two of the twelve spies sent by Moses to observe the land of Canaan, Joshua and Caleb, returned with a positive report. The ten spy report caused the Hebrews to cry, panic, and despair of ever entering their Promised Land. Numbers 13:25-14:12, Zechariah 7:3-5, 8:19).

First and Second Temple Destructions
• Av 9, 586 BC - The First Temple built by King Solomon was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar and the Judeans were sent into the Babylonian exile. About 100,000 Jews killed during invasion. Exile of remaining tribes in southern kingdom to Babylon and Persia.
• Av 9, 70 AD - The Second Temple built by Ezra and Nehemiah was destroyed by the Romans on August 4, 70 AD. Over 2,500,000 Jews die as a result of war, famine and disease. Over 1,000,000 Jews exiled to all parts of the Roman Empire. Over 100,000 Jews sold as slaves by Romans or were killed and tortured in gladiatorial “games” and pagan celebrations.

The last four years have seen the following events:
Av 9, 2018 AD – July 23rd, 2018. On this day a massive stone fell out of the Kotel section of the Western Wall onto the Robinson’s Arch used for egalitarian prayers. The stone fell from the ninth level of stones and happened the day after the fast of Tish’a B’Av (9th of Av). Israel Radio reported that the stone weighed about 220 pounds.

Av 9, 2019 AD – August 11th, 2019. Palestinian Muslims shout at Israeli security forces (unseen) in the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. At least five vehicles were damaged in attacks by Jerusalem Arabs hurling stones between the start of Tisha B’Av, which began with the fall of darkness on Saturday evening, and Sunday at 12 noon. An 18-year-old Jewish boy was seriously wounded Sunday morning when he was attacked by an Arab terrorist on Hagai Street in Jerusalem.

Av 9, 2020 AD – July 30th, 2020. Protests against the Israeli government due to the Covid-19 lock-downs continue unabated. Hamas views Israel’s intentions to extend its sovereignty over parts of the Jordan Valley, Judea and Samaria as a declaration of war.

Av 9, 2021 AD – July 18th, 2021. Tish’a B’av was marked by unseasonable heat. Violent Arabs began to confront police before dawn in order to prevent any Jews from ascending to the Temple Mount. The Arabs barricaded themselves into the compound and pelted police with rocks and stones thrown from al-Aqsa Mosque. Jewish Voice for Peace, a US left-wing anti-Israel group, observed Tish’a B’av, by “praying” for the destruction of modern Israel. Starting on Monday evening, July 19, the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha will begin and Jews will be banned from the Temple Mount from Tuesday until the following Sunday.

The 2022 Update
Av 9, 2022 AD – August 7th, 2022. Once again Israel was under attack, with an estimated 950 rockets raining down from Gaza into Israel starting on Friday, August 5th. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) claimed responsibility for firing the rockets, and announced that “this is an open campaign and not limited only to the Gaza Strip.”  The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) responded with “a targeted campaign against the Palestinian Islamic Jihad” during which three of the PIJ leaders were killed: Bilal Nimr Abu Amsha,  Khaled Mansour, and Taysir Al-Jabari, as were commanders Khalil al-Bahtini and Abdullah Kadoum. Additionally, the IDF responded with dozens of strikes across the Gaza Strip striking several PIJ military sites and buildings, including eleven strikes on rocket launch sites. The latest wave of rocket attacks took place just after an Egyptian brokered cease fire was declared.

Conclusions
Yahweh declared that Tish’a B’Av would be a day of mourning and misfortune. To see these occurrences as simply coincidence would deny His word. Let us pray that Av 9th this year is not yet another day of disaster for our Jewish brothers.
