Abigail’s Wisdom - Gloria Pierre Dean.

"Be kind to one another" Ephesians 4:32

The marriage of Nabal and Abigail was not a happy one. Nabal was very rich and owned thousands of sheep and goats. He was rough and mean to people. {I Samuel 25: 2-3 NIV} His neighbour David was also a shepherd. On occasions, he and his men helped look after Nabal’s flock. One day David needed food for his men and asked Nabal for food. His response was negative. David became angry and decided to retaliate. It was going to be bloody.

Thankfully Abigail received the news of her husband’s behaviour to David. “ Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked man that no one can talk to him.” said the talebearer. {1 Samuel 25:17 NIV}.

She reacted quickly. Unknown to her husband she amassed food and took it quickly to David. She interceded so that her husband would not be killed. Her efforts were successful. In her words; “Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool, and folly goes with him” {1 Samuel 25:25 NIV}.

Did Nabal reap what he had sewn? He was foolish, surly, and mean. After the incident, she told him how she had saved his life. In shock, he had a heart attack and died days later.  Abigail was a kind and wise woman who later became David’s wife. She was sent a royal proposal by David. {1 Samuel 25:39-40 NIV}.

Kindness has great rewards!  ‘Be kind to one another’ {Ephesians 4:32 NIV}.

So, today in your daily life, at work, in traffic or at home, make a choice. Choose to be kind. The Holy Spirit in you will help if you ask.

“Lord, today help me to be kind to all my neighbours”
