     Every few years, a solid, well-written business book emerges from the shadows to ‘stand out’ and become a ‘must have’ guide.  A work that will help not only the career seeker, but the job recruiter.  Such ‘two-in-one’ books are rare.  However, once you have one in your hands, it becomes a welcome addition to your ‘business arsenal’ for many years.

     “The Unspoken Rules”, by Gorick Ng is quickly becoming one of those ‘two-in-one’ resources that will find a home in a backpack or on a bookshelf as a go-to resource.  The full title is: “The Unspoken Rules: Secrets To Starting Your Career Off Right” (2021, 263 pages, Harvard Business Review Press).

     The American business marketplace is in another state of transition.  During the pandemic, it was becoming an employee-centered environment.  Now that we are coming out of the pandemic and are likely heading into a recession, layoffs could be on the horizon and the marketplace is shifting back into the traditional employer-centered workplace.  “The Unspoken Rules” is a work that could help those who are serious about advancing into their career path AND give employers a ‘leg up’ in spotting up-and-coming talent ahead of the curve—and in REAL time.

     Ng takes the business reader on a journey through the seas of learning through personal experience, determination, and wisdom from his own upbringing.  This propelled him to succeed at Harvard College and Harvard Business School.  Sharpening and transferring his experiences to the halls of Harvard as a Career Advisor, Ng has talked with dozens of students and employers on what works—and what does not—when it comes to planting those ‘first solid steps’ into the working world from internships and placements.

     “The Unspoken Rules” has fifteen chapters, including a backgrounder on how the author learned from the ground up.  Chapters include: “Be Proactive”, “Send the Right Signals” and “Master Meetings”.  Ng sets a nice table in the work, full of stories and summaries from the front lines of business and employment.  The type of information included in this work, coupled with the realization that both the workplace and the potential employees entering its doors have changed with the times.  One cannot ‘rise’ on the success ladder unless they realize some of the changes are not written…but unspoken.  “The Unspoken Rules” may be found through your favorite electronic bookseller, brick-and-mortar bookstore, or through Ng’s website: www.gorick.com.
