Anticipated Joy
It was exhilarating to walk on the Great Wall of China. I gazed at the ancient brick and tried to imagine it wending its way more than 13,000 miles. The walkway is quite rugged with towers and stairways—some so steep it seemed as though I was climbing a ladder. Looking out across the landscape I could almost see invading armies intent on breaching that intimidating wall.
As I reflect on that breathtaking experience, my thoughts turn to another wall I plan to see. It makes the Great Wall of China pale into insignificance. The wall I anticipate seeing is described in Revelation 21 as a bride, beautifully dressed for her husband. It surrounds a cubed city, about 1,400 miles on each side, and 1,400 miles high. The wall is made up of twelve foundations of precious stones, such as jasper, sapphire, emerald, topaz, and more. There are twelve gates in this wall, and each is made of a single pearl. However, these gates will never be shut. Instead of being designed to keep people out, this wall is open to whoever calls upon the name of Jesus (Acts 16:31).
The Holy City, the New Jerusalem, is where God Himself will live and reign throughout eternity. He “so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Living at a time when events seem uncertain and out of control, it is a comfort to turn my eyes on Jesus and daily read His Promises.
“Father, it is easy to lose focus of Your ultimate plan. I accept Your gift of eternal life. Help me study Your Word more and trust my future to You. Amen.”
NIV Revelation 21:10-21, Acts 16:31, John 3:16, Matthew Henry Commentary
