Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” John 21:16c NIV

Jesus’ response to Peter moves from feeding lambs to taking car of sheep. Are not lambs and sheep one and the same? A lamb is a young sheep, under 12 months in age. A major focus on a lamb would thus then be making sure it if properly fed that it might grow into a healthy sheep.

When we first become a Christian, we must be fed like a new born child, being indulged in the reading of God’s word to provide us the true food that we need. As we progress in our Christian walk, continuing to read God’s word, we need guidance (mentoring) so that our faith will continue to grow as we face the many things we are bombarded with in this world. We become more vessels for the Lord as we grow in our Christian maturity.
