Isn’t our modern-day technology great? Having lived through several exciting and unexpected decades, I can surely attest to its expansion. A prime example;
A recent morning message appeared on my Alexa screen, which I just couldn’t pass up. Seems Alexa is becoming a little testy these days. The message read,
“Ask me the best thing about Monday," which I did.
Her response, “Ask me on Tuesday.”
My next question was, “Alexa, what’s the best thing about Tuesday?”
Her comeback, “It’s not Monday.”
Oh well, we can’t beat high tech knowledge, can we?
The below faith-based excerpt is taken straight off the Internet.
“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” (Daniel 12:4)
“Knowledge shall increase,” declared God’s angel. But as we all know; this increase of knowledge doesn’t only apply to the Holy Scriptures. On November 23, 2018, an op-ed entitled, “Knowledge doubles almost every day, and it’s set to increase,” was published online by the Digital Journal. In that article, Feras A. Batarseh of the London School of Economics points out:
“Until year 1900, human knowledge approximately doubled every century. However, by 1950 human knowledge doubled every 25 years. In 2000, human knowledge would double every year. Now, our knowledge is almost doubling every day.”
“The Digital Journal even referred to the “knowledge tsunami” we are all so familiar with. If the early American hero Daniel Boone (1734–1820) could somehow be transported into our hi-tech times, he would probably be so shocked that his rifle might go off and shoot himself in the foot! Mega-cities, towering skyscrapers, superfast flying machines, international satellites and space stations, hands-free electric cars, underground transportation systems, fiber optics, facial recognition security devices, iPhones, and instant messaging—these are just a few current wonders.”
What will come tomorrow? No one knows.
And what about the ongoing perceived threat of impending war, of a major conflict of unknown consequences? I’m thoroughly convinced in today’s high-tech world, boots on the ground would surely be outdated, and would become totally obsolete. Can we say electromagnetic pulse war?
Oftentimes our dream world may take us into some of the most outlandish environments and events. So, is this a prime example? When and where does the dream advance into being reality? Thus we find another fiction parable, an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. We shall label its rendering “The War In the Skies.”
I was on my way to the fast food drive-thru to pick up our morning breakfast, when I stopped at a red light. In the lane to my right was an old well-kept vintage car, the type having the wraparound windshield and big tail fins. And oh yes, a big CD radio antenna and a flag.
The driver appeared to be an older man betrayed by his slumped position, displaying a long white beard on which dripped greasy black tobacco juice .The light changed, and he gave a toothy smile, a big wave and a two finger peace sign as we drove on.
Ironically, the next light caught us as well. Looking over, this same man was holding up a rather crudely printed sign which read, “The end is near.” The light quickly changed and we both departed on our separate ways, without any explanation of this unusual happening.
I didn’t think much more about this weird display, passing it off as just another strange chain of events. Or, maybe it was a portent of my next dream. At least he didn’t advertise 'Will Work for Food.'
Was this strange adventure the prelude to my dream excursion? At least until this odd roadway meeting and weird sign display, I hadn’t really given much thought to this kind of warning. I guess I had been too caught up in myself.
Then a dream came to me, totally in concert with my roadway venture.
I had pulled back into my driveway, not seeing much change in the environment. The bitter sting of winter had ended, and the sights and sounds of an early Spring were in the air. All was relatively calm, as I entered the house.
I looked out my window while sipping my favorite coffee, and the colorful sunrise seemed to play the same old familiar tune of peace. Then it happened quickly, as if in a bad war movie score.
The welcoming hopes of a quick spring disappeared into the great unknown. The usual soft romantic skyline had suddenly, without warning, turned into a blasting inferno. A strong stench of smoke was over the world, and seemed to choke out all sense of an early spring reality. It was nothing short of total chaos, this unexpected fire storm, strongly indicated signs of an impending disaster. It was surely war in the skies.
The overhead blinding, red, blazing inferno continued, sparking wildly across the horizon. It was as if as if the sun had suddenly taken a dive into our world. Blast after blast after blast overshadowing the surrounding cloud masses.
Immediately there were many emergency vehicle sirens, accompanied by honking vehicle horns, as the traffic piled up, followed by tremendous shouting in the street.
What am I to do? The local television news must have the answer. Turning quickly to the news channel, all I got was an all-too-familiar emergency warning notice frozen on the screen announcing a nationwide emergency, instructing all citizens to shelter in place. Well, maybe my community church has an answer, so I attempted to pull out of my driveway.
I had no such luck, as my car failed to start. There was no need, however, for the roads had not stood the test. Pile after pile of rolled-up asphalted piles appeared in the distance. There were no police in sight, in spite of total chaos everywhere. I would need to see to my own safety, so I retreated back to the safety of my home.
I quickly found that none of my high-tech electronics were working. My cell phone was dead. My iPad was off-line as well as my cable internet and television. There was no communication whatsoever. Rebooting my router proved to be of no avail. Next, the electricity started blinking and then went out entirely. I was totally in the dark, with no communication. What now?
Thanks to Heaven's providence, I woke up. It had all been a dream. My initial encounter on the road and then all the chaos had been a real nightmare. I must take note. I must tell someone, anyone! The message must get out. This chaos must never happen to our people in our lifetime. The church may be the only answer, I thought.
Pastor, pastor, please pick up, we must talk. End of the would-be disaster, beginning of service.
I close out this blog by relating this old-time country song:
Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Sometimes it feels like this world's gone craz
Grandpa, take me back to yesterday
When the line between right and wrong
Didn't seem so hazy
Lovers really fall in love to stay
Stand beside each other, come what may
Promise really somethin' people kept
Not just somethin' they would say
Families really bow their heads to pray
Daddies really never go away
Oh oh, grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Grandpa, everything is changing fast
We call it progress, but I just don't know
And Grandpa, wander back into the past
And paint me the picture of long ag

EPILOGUE
I trust you enjoyed this bit of high-tech fictional musing. Could its plot actually happen in our lifetime, in today’s high-tech world? Well, you be the judge, I have my own private opinion.
Oh, by the way, have you tuned into your favorite local, drive-by news lately? Someone must have gotten a hint of my dream. Here goes another round of government hearings, I presume.
So, again I end with much prayer, with a concluding big shout of Amen!
