Biblical Surgery

Too many Christians simply look at the Bible as recorded words assembled over multiple generations by forty different authors, but it is a lot more than that.  The Biblical “scribes” wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  The Bible contains God’s first recorded words, “Let there be light.”  The Scriptures record God’s actual writing of the Ten Commandments with His own finger.  The library of sixty-six books and letters reveals both the history and the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.  Everything that pertains to life, both the benefits and consequences of human behavior, is recorded in the Holy Book.  There can be no debate as to the power and authority of God’s Word.  Yet, in view of the anointed sixty-six parchments, many choose to just “own” a copy of the Book, instead of reading and learning from its pages.  Why is that?

I liken the Word of God to a surgeon who cuts into the body to correct malfunctions and abnormalities within the individual.  When people read the Word and see that their “secret sins” are exposed, they tend to limit their reading to only Scriptures that can benefit their desires.  Many times the “Biblical surgery” is performed with no anesthesia.  Sin is sin and it is called out with rapid precision.  There is no “dullness” with God’s Word, for it is “powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword.”  It will separate the spiritual and carnal man with one cut.  Not only does the Word deal with man’s two natures, but it also exposes the “thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)  When one is Biblically exposed to one’s own sins, there is a tendency to try and justify his errant behavior, but the Bible will not justify that tactic.

People do not want correction and disciplinary action taken against them; rather, they want control of their own lives and the freedom to choose what is acceptable for them.  Reading the Bible can expose our weaknesses.  One can readily see why so many Christians shy away from the Word.  Liberal churches that fail to expose sin and its consequences will cater to the “itching” ears of their constituents.  It used to be that people carried their Bibles to church, but today more and more are leaving them home.  There are pastors that read the benefits of the Word while leaving judgment and sin hidden within its pages.  More and more it is becoming, “out of sight, out of mind.”

I don’t look forward to medical procedures, but I realize they are for my own good.  May the Word of God be the “x-ray” that reveals if there are things in our life that are hindering our spiritual growth.  If the Word finds areas that need attention, let the “Great Physician” perform the surgery.  Believers have the Old Rugged Cross Insurance and it will cover our sins with the “co-pay” of repentance.

Instead of our Bibles being a decorating symbol in our homes, let us open them daily, expecting the truth to set us free.
