More Like Jesus
I have heard people say, “I am willing to do whatever God wants me to do, if He would just tell me.” Or they ask, “How can I know God’s will?”
Early in His ministry, Jesus went to the synagogue and stood up to read words from the prophet Isaiah. “The Spirit of the Lord…has anointed me to preach good news to the poor,…proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed...” The passage from Isaiah also includes, “…to bind up (heal) the broken-hearted.” The prophesy referred to Him.
Luke 6:40 records Jesus’ words, “A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.” Does that mean I should be doing the things Jesus came to do? It appears to me that that would make sense. If I am striving to be like Jesus, my Teacher, then I should be striving to be more like Him, doing the things He thought were important. Things like volunteering at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen, packing a shoebox, sending an encouraging card, donating clothing and household items that I no longer use.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18 gives additional suggestions, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will...” It is not necessary to go to faraway places, or study theology for years to be joyful, to pray, and give thanks in all things.
“Jesus, please help me do, right now, those things that will make me look more like you. And please help me to do it joyfully. Amen.”
NIV Luke 4:18-19, Isaiah 61:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
I am a retired teacher who wants to make Jesus known.
