“And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:6-7 KJV).”

Jesus’ first bed was a manger.

Have you given much thought to first beds for babies?

Several things crossed my mind.

Our first child, daughter April, came home from the Indianola, Mississippi hospital to a brand new crib. She weighed only 6 pounds 7 ounces; the crib seemed humongous.

In contrast, son Lee came home from a Toledo, Ohio hospital to a baby bassinet. He weighed 8 pounds 15 ounces and filled the small bed.

I don’t remember any baby from my family or friends that rested their body in a cradle.

I helped care for grandson, Alex, for several days when he came home from a Crestview, Florida hospital. His nighttime bed was a lowered baby stroller right next to the couch where I slept. The convenience allowed me to give him bottles while his mother caught up on needed rest.

My first nephew Mark was born in Maryland; just outside of Washington, DC. His parents brought him home from the hospital to their small mobile home. His first bed was a doll bed. He fit inside nicely.

An elderly friend shared the story of being born prematurely.

Her first baby bed was a shoebox!
