If we were to measure the square inches of the rearview mirrors on a car, and then measure the square inches of the windshield of the same car and then compare them, we could determine a ratio, or approximately how much or what percentage of the time we ought to be thinking about the past in comparison with the percentage of our time ideally spent looking and thinking forward. A preoccupation with the rearview mirror is a sure way to eventually cause an accident, just as a preoccupation with the past at the expense of the present and the future will prove itself to be destructive sooner or later.
