Soaring Wings

“…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. they will soar on wings like eagles ,,,”  Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Eagles are lazy – or at least they seem to be.

You’ve probably seen eagles, or more likely hawks, falcons or other raptors – soaring and gliding with outstretched wings in wide circles high in the sky. Of course they fly that way so they can spot potential prey on the ground, then dive to snatch them for a quick meal.

Yet how can they stay aloft? Simple enough – they take advantage of thermals, which are heated updrafts of air created when sun-warmed air near the ground rises in a column and then dissipates as it cools. And raptors – like eagles – often use these to provide the lift they need to soar high enough to see their prey.

Isaiah used this image when he compared the eagles’ soaring to the confidence of believers trusting in God’s promises during times of adversity. When combined with their faith in God, they’re depending on divine thermals.

I try to do that when I have a problem. For it is when I remember his promises that I can soar above the problem and gain a new perspective that allows me to see his solution and then strengthens me to work with it.

So are eagles lazy? Actually not, since they just use God’s provision to get what they need – and it’s a lesson for me, too.
