Samuel means because I asked the Lord for him and the other meaning is heard of God. Elkanah an Ephraimite had two wives: Peninnah and Hannah. Penninah had children but Hannah do not have children. They used to go yearly once to Shiloh to the Tabernacle of Ephraimites. Elkanah loved Hannah more. Hannah made a vow in the Tabernacle that Lord if you give me son, I will give you.

Hannah wept and pouring her depression to the Lord. But Eli thought she was drunk. Eli had two sons Hophni and Phineas who were priests. They took from the cooking pot the sacrifice with fork the portion of priests before boiling and slept with the women serving in the Tabernacle. Hannah conceived and gave birth to Samuel and after Samuel was weaned, she left him in Shiloh Tabernacle. Every year once when she went to Samuel, she gave him dress.

Elkanah was Ephramite and Hannah was Levite. So, Samuel became priest. Bible is a book of God who is a God of order. One man of God told Eli about his sons but Eli cannot able to restrain his two sons. Only 5 revelations and two prophets from the time of Judges that is why word of God is very rare at the time Samuel was ministering under Eli.

The fourfold cycle in Judges: Sin and then crisis of Spirit then repentance and then salvation. This cycle is repeating again and again in the book of Judges. God gave them Judges but time and again they did evil in the sight of God. Four times God called Samuel. Third time Eli realized that Lord was calling. And he told him to say -Speak Lord for your servant is listening-. Third time Eli realized means Eli was not much familiar with the Lord that time.

Menora goes whole night in the Tabernacle. Samuel heard when that light was dim. One of rooms in the Tabernacle in the Holy place Samuel slept. And Eli also slept in other room. Samuel ran to Eli three times. We need 100% of God and 100% of man. To be accountable we need teacher.

Eli cannot able to discipline his sons who are contemptable. Speak Lord for your servant is listening Samuel told and Lord told him that the guilt of Eli house cannot be forgiven either by sacrifice or offering. 12yearold boy Samuel is listening from God when there are many in Israel. That’s why God told I am going to do something in Israel so that hearer’s ears will tingle.

After Samuel heard of God 4000 Israelites died and 30000 Israelites died, Hophni & Phinehas died, Ark of God captured by Philistines and Eli died but Samuel won Philistines and called the name Ebenezer after Ark of God and Glory of God returned to Israelites but Israel asked for a king instead of God – 1 Samuel 3 – 8. And he anointed Saul and David as the first and second kings. Samuel had experience as prophet and judge and also priest.

In 1 Samuel 3: Firstly, Samuel mother gave him as provision for God. Provision was service under Eli in the Tabernacle of God. Secondly Samuel got privilege from God by listening from him as his name means heard of God. Finally, Samuel had received the plan of God. That guilt of Eli house cannot be removed either by sacrifice or offering.
