Fulfilling The Desires oF One's Heart

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalms 37: 4 NASB).”
We are inherently self-centered creatures. Therefore, the first impression is that this verse provides us the means through which we can get what we want if we are delighted with God and the things of God.
Being delighted, that is to experience great pleasure, in God and in the things of God is relatively easy when things are going our way, but not so easy when our faith challenged.
Virtually all of us can name a few things that went our way that we can boastfully attribute to such things as godly living and answered prayer.
But most of us have also experienced the heartache of not only having other desires not met, but replaced with loss, tragedy, and disappointment. During the recovery from such times, the prosperity of the wicked adds salt to our wounds, and our faith is shaken.
The desires of our hearts that God wants to give may be quite different from the desires that we have in mind. It is the desires that God wants to give us and their fulfillment that this verse is referring.
The challenge for a born-again believer is to reach and to maintain spiritual maturity. An indication that one is spiritually mature is that he can say from his heart that his only desire here on Earth is to have an intimate walk with the Lord. The spiritually mature believer accepts whatever blessing or adversity it takes to reach and to maintain that goal.
