We Do Not Understand

At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.” John 16:17-18 NIV

By now the disciples and Jesus were on the way to the garden. As they walked Jesus spoke to them. There would have been a chance for some of them to gather and make these comments without Jesus directly being questioned. But of course Jesus knew what they were thinking.

When Jesus tells us something or asks us a question which we don’t understand, what happens? Does the Holy Spirit quickly enlighten you, or is there a pause, a silence, and no answer? So, then what? Might Jesus be waiting to see if we ask Him more that we may understand? Maybe we think if we don’t get an immediate answer that maybe the issue is not that important. Now, if Jesus speaks to you about something, don’t you think it is of importance? The Lord at times will test us on our willingness to understand and accept that which He has to say to us. Don’t let something go without seeking more to understand.
