“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
I hear, Oh, My God everywhere, and I wonder to which god they are referring? There are many gods in this world. There is the god of sex, the god of wealth, the god of power and possession, and many mythical gods from the ancient past who still have a place in people’s hearts. There are many gods, as many as there are desires and passions for them, but none of these gods of men love men. None of them are live to have a caring concern for any man or even themselves. Where is Zeus or Jupiter, where is Braham, Ra, or Ashur? Did they ever really exist? Does the Islamic Allah exist as they pray to him several times a day? They place their prayer rugs towards Mecca and bow upon them. Does that work for them really, or is it just a false god stolen from the God of Abraham to give a false sense of security. The American Indian worshiped the Great Spirit, and some today see this god as Mother Nature.
Other gods from philosophical precepts teach how one should live, yet they are all in the grave. Buddha’s body was cremated, and his ashes were placed in monuments. Hinduism was created by a group of sages whose writings were organized by Maharshi Vyasa. Confucius is buried in his hometown of Qufu, Shandong Province, China. And Muhammad is buried in Medina, Saudi Arabia. These were not gods, yet people worship them. Are these who they are saying Oh, My God too? Are these the gods we truly worship, desires and passion of one’s own heart, mystic beings from the mind’s creation, men who lived and spoke then died, and objects of their creation from wood, stone, and metal?
The God I identify Oh, My God is the Creator of all there is as before the beginning there was God and nothing else. He was before time as He created the matter in which we measure time. God was before language and, through His Spirit, spoke His words into the hearts of men. Therefore He is not restricted by time and language as He is a Spirit. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24) God is holy and apart from time and language and consumes the length, width, and depth that encompasses all there is. Therefore we can only know Him, worship Him, in spirit and truth, as He is the truth.
God has a name above all names as He is the Most High God, and His name is Yehovah in Hebrew or Lord in English. It means that He is self-Existent or Eternal and Identifies Himself as the I AM Who I AM. “God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.” (Exodus 3:14) I AM is that He exists without beginning or end. This name appears in the Scripture 719 times. Five hundred eight times in the Old Testament and 211 times in the New Testament.
El or God is the supreme deity and the Creator of the universe, as He created the heavens and the earth. As the Creator, then He is the Father of creation. Nowhere in the Scripture does God have a female title. He is not Mother Nature but Father God. God is the Father to His chosen people, the nation of Israel. At a time when Israel we being disrespectful to God, He rebuked them through His Prophet Malachi. “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests who despise My name. But you say, ‘How have we despised Your name?” (Malachi 1:6) We must be careful to who we are speaking when we say Oh, My God. His Prophets feared God reverently and addressed Him as their Father. “But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8) “Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously each against his brother so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?” (Malachi 2:10)
Who is the Father of creation? He is a Spirit that loves His creation. He created man to be a creature that would love Him and his fellow man. “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 John 4:8) To ensure this in humanity, God created man in His own image on the sixth day. “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:27-28) God gave man dominion over His earthly creation to rule in righteousness and justice with a loving heart, as humanity was created in His image and has the moral attributes of righteousness, justice, and lovingkindness. Humanity in the image of His Creator Father God, who is the I AM, was created to exist in love, righteousness, and justice. “He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.” (Psalm 33:5) In His image, He created man not to be prideful of himself but to have pride in his relationship with his Creator, God. “Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
Man, in his arrogance, fell to the temptation he could be as God and ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and shamed himself by his disobedience to the Word of God. The man now knew his nakedness before God and that God would see his sinfulness, and man hid in the fig leaves. The righteous, loving relationship between God and man had been broken, and the curse of sin entered into the world. God cursed the Serpent that allowed Satan to enter into it. God paced hatred between Satan and the woman and promised her seed would come to his ultimate downfall. (Genesis 3:14-15) God cursed the woman with greater pain in childbirth and made her subject to the man he would rule over her. (Genesis 3:16)
God also cursed the earth that man would now toil for the food he eats, and thorns would grow amongst its produce. That man would return to the dust from which he came. (Genesis 3:17-19) Adam and Eve were then driven from the Garden of Eden, the paradise that God had given them to live. They would now labor in the world for their lives until they faced death at the cost of their sin. (Genesis 3:24) “The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)
Oh, My God is a God of Love, and love demands justice that in His Day we all will live in righteousness and truth in His Word. Oh, My God, in His love for His creation and the crown of His Creation, created in His image, was now under the sentence of death because of his sinful nature. God, in His patience, is not wanting humanity to perish in eternity but be restored into a right relationship with Him. “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) God’s mercy endures forever, and He came Himself as a man and came to save that which was lost. He came to pay the debt of sin, which no man could pay and live eternally in the Kingdom of God. He paid our sin debt on the cross shedding His blood and sacrificing His life in place of ours. He came as the Lamb of God, the perfect sacrifice for man’s sin. “The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)
There is no greater love than God, the I AM, that would lay down His life that the condemned should gain life even while yet they were in rebellion against Him. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Regardless of what others may say, there is nothing free in this world but man’s salvation, a free gift from God by His grace. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
There are many things that humanity believes in found in this world, but none of them provide them with love in the arms of the almighty God, eternal life in His Kingdom of peace, joy, and righteous living. Why is it that many a man will not believe in God who will redeem and restore them from the wretched creatures they have become? Just believe and have faith, and the truth of God’s Word can free you. “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
This is the Oh, My God, the I Am Who I Am, who was before the beginning, created you before the beginning, and loved you before the beginning. He came as your Savior to guide you back home with Him in paradise. His invitation is for all who will believe and follow Him in faith in the knowledge of His truth. “This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4)
