Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.  Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her Ephesians 5:22-25 NIV

I am sure that this reading is not a favorite of most woman, and that is easy to understand. Submitting to another human in everything is not easy at all.

Why would Christ wish that a wife submit to her husband? Marriage is Holy Matrimony in the eyes of the Lord. He wishes that the couple be totally united, an example to the world of what a Christian marriage should entail.

Now, before you men start licking your lips and rubbing your hands together and thinking a big resounding “YES!!” within your mind, I have a question for you. Men, do you totally submit yourself to Jesus Christ? Hmm…..did I hear your answer? You might say that this is not mentioned within this passage, and even though that may be true, how can you truly expect your wife to submit to you if you don’t totally submit yourself to the Lord? Would it not be hypocritical to demand that your wife submit to you if you don’t submit to Christ? Submitting of one to another is not a matter of control. It is a way to seek unity. Often husbands and wives will see issues from different points of view for various reasons. When a decision needs to be made someone may need to submit. This is the responsibility of the wife. Now, this does not mean that the decision made will be that which the man wishes. No, because the decision is to be that which is the best for the couple in the eyes of the Lord.

Just from the above reading, men, I can tell you one reason why you must submit to Christ. What does it say that husbands are to do? They are to love their wives just as Christ loves the church. Do you want to say that there is no way I can love my wife to the degree that Christ loves the church.? Well, unless you have the Holy Spirit indwelling you, I would agree with that statement. So, in order to love your wife as Christ loves the church you must have the Holy Spirit living within you, which is received from submitting your life and will over to His care.

Husbands, if your wives know that you truly love them as Christ loves the church, it will become much easier for her to submit to you. She will know and understand that you love her so much and want that which is best for her.

There must be continuous sharing between spouses. In submitting to her husband, a wife would like to know that there are no major surprise decisions on matters which have not thoroughly been discussed between the man and his wife. Holy Matrimony is meant to be a harmonious existence.

So men, are you ready to truly love your wives as Christ loves the church?

Single men and women may be sighing here, thinking, “well since I am not married, I do not need to worry about submitting.” Wrong! Read the verse prior to this reading. “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21 NIV.

If you want to be a Christian, you must learn to submit.
